I’ve been thinking a lot lately. I know … this could be bad. Very bad. But truthfully, it’s been good for me. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my life, with my time, with my creative energies. I still don’t have a lot of answers, but I do know that whatever path I chose, I just have to pick something and get to work. Happiness doesn’t fall out of the sky. Success isn’t magical. Both come from hard work and intention.

We’ve been struggling at home with homework and emotional meltdowns. Shelby is crazy smart. She has the most amazing vocabulary for a kid her age. Her imagination is phenomenal. But she struggles with staying focused and doing things she isn’t interested in (read: homework). It’s a daily struggle to get her to pay attention to the task at hand and get it done. The thing is, I’m the exact same way. If I don’t like something, I don’t do it or I procrastinate doing it until it’s horribly stressful and uncomfortable. I can find myself miserable. A lot.

Lately, I’m trying to be better about tackling everything on my to-do list, even the things  I don’t like. I’m trying to approach everything with a positive, happy heart. As I do this, I hope to teach Shelby to do the same. It’s not easy, since it doesn’t come natural to either one of us!

As I was thinking about all of this … I came across a quote from the Dalai Lama that seemed appropriate: “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” Yep. We have to make our own happiness.
