This is why I love my husband
"How much does school lunch cost?"
"$1.25 ..."
This is how my conversation with Mike started today.
I'm in DC this week on business and whenever I'm gone we normally do a mid-morning check-in where Mike tells me how school drop-off went.
Normally, on the way to school, Mike and Shelby have some really great conversations. And it's during our "check-ins" that Mike fills me in on what they talked about. It's a fabulous like peek into Shelby's world.
Today, Shelby told her daddy about a little boy in her class who eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch each and every day. If you don't have any money on your lunch account at Shelby's school, they will feed you, but you don't get the same lunch as all the other kids ... the kids with money. So day in and day out, this little boy gets nothing more than a pb&j.
Mike wanted to know how much school lunch costs so he could go to the school and pay for this child's lunch for the next few months. I'm not sure I wanted to cry because of his compassion, or if it's because a little boy with so little to eat each day. Either way, tears filled my eyes and I felt like my heart was going to burst.
Every child in this world deserves to have a warm and healthy lunch at school. I feel so blessed that my husband and daughter are astute enough to recognize a child in need and then spring to action. I am grateful my family can help one little boy, but my heart aches for the others just like him. I wish we could do more.
